Job Description
Strategist
We’re hiring a Strategist to join Big Duck. Our new team member will join a collaborative, equity-focused team of nonprofit communications consultants. They will lead and collaborate on communications projects for our nonprofit clients including marketing and fundraising planning, branding, and campaigns. The Strategist will conduct research, formulate insights, and generate recommendations that reflect an understanding of each client’s unique context, mission, and capacity.

What does the Strategist do?

Here’s some of what the job includes:

Crafting communications, marketing, and donor communications plans that provide strategic and tactical direction.
Conducting research to inform communications strategies with an emphasis on equitable and inclusive research design.
Developing strategy for campaign communications, including capital/major donor campaigns, digital fundraising campaigns, recruitment/participation campaigns, and other targeted efforts with a communications focus.
Developing brand strategy recommendations and bringing a strategic perspective to the development of brand assets, such as messaging and visual identities, in collaboration with our writers, designers, and account managers.
Leading and participating in client meetings, intensive sessions, and training workshops with an emphasis on inclusion.
Supporting Big Duck’s new business development, which includes periodically drafting or reviewing proposal content, participating in presentations with prospects, and contributing to Big Duck’s content marketing (e.g., by writing blog posts, recording podcasts, co-leading webinars, and beyond).
Advancing Big Duck’s antiracist commitments by engaging in ongoing racial justice competency building workshops, participating in internal equity meetings, and bringing a focus on antiracism to client work and with colleagues.
The Strategist reports to the Director of Strategy.

Requirements
All Big Duck staff are currently working remotely as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we don’t yet know if we will re-establish a centralized office (our office was formerly located in DUMBO, Brooklyn). Either way, throughout 2021, we’ll be working on our long-term policies to support remote work. For this hire, we are seeking applications from candidates who are interested in working remotely anywhere in the continental United States. Once it is safe to travel and meet in person, periodic travel to NYC and elsewhere in the US for client meetings will be required.

We’re looking for someone with a commitment to antiracism as well as with competencies to advance racial justice and equity in their work. Our new hire will have some experience in nonprofit communications, marketing, and/or fundraising (in-house, as a freelancer, or through an agency) or a closely related area of work.

Competencies of strong candidates include…

Knowledge and experience in nonprofit communications, marketing and/or fundraising
Comfortable executing big-picture communications strategy and detailed tactical plans, and moving between these levels
Ability to conduct research to inform communications strategies with an emphasis on equitable and inclusive research design—facilitating interviews and focus groups, designing and analyzing surveys, assessing materials and data, evaluating peers, and surfacing findings and insights relevant to each client and project.
Presentation, training, and facilitation skills with a particular emphasis on inclusion and equity
Ability to implement scopes of work pragmatically and adaptively
Ability to collaborate clearly and effectively with colleagues in support of client needs
Ability to meet deadlines and manage a large workload independently
Communication skills—in person, on the phone, by video, and in writing
Values and fosters learning and growth in themselves and others
Actively advances equity in their day-to-day work and contributes to Big Duck’s antiracist commitments
Comfortable with Microsoft Office, Keynote, Google Workspace, and Asana

Benefits
The Strategist role is a mid-level position on the Big Duck team, asking 2-5 years of relevant experience or equivalent and requiring independent work and substantial skill. Big Duck has clear and transparent salary bands documented and available for all staff to review, and the salary range for mid-level positions on our team is $50,000 to $70,000.

Process
Ideal candidates will be available to start in March 2021. Please note that this job posting will be live through most of January 2021, and we will not begin contacting candidates until that time.
