Job Description
Director of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

The founding Director of Institutional DEI will have all-school impact, both internally and externally. They must have outstanding communication skills to lead meaningful, collaborative, and transformative work with all constituencies (students, faculty, staff, parents, trustees, and alumnae). We are looking for a candidate who is student-centered and, preferably, who has classroom and/or boarding school experience. They must have a deep understanding of diversity challenges and an ability to lead in creating and sustaining an antiracist and gender inclusive culture and environment.

This position reports directly to the Head of School and is a member of the Senior Administrative Team. The Director will work to establish a DEI lens in all decisions of the school: finance; admission and hiring; curriculum review, development, and delivery; and advancement and strategic visioning. This person must be a strong collaborator able to create a vision of change that will inspire colleagues at all levels and help Emma Willard meaningfully serve our ever more diverse community.

Emma Willard School has been a pioneer in girls’ education for 206 years. Our school is built on making history, a responsibility that propels us forward. Today, that responsibility includes a commitment to racial and gender equity. We know that there is healing work to do as we reckon with the lived experiences that have caused hurt to members of our Emma community in the past and present. The school is dedicating time and resources to listen as we work to strengthen our culture of equity and inclusion and increasing the diversity of our faculty and staff. This search comes at a critical time of institutional self-reflection and heightened social consciousness regarding issues of equity and inclusivity.

The School encourages candidates from under-represented groups and individuals who have demonstrated experience with diverse populations who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and/or service to apply. We seek to identify, recruit, and develop employees who bring a diversity of experiences, perspectives, talents, and backgrounds. Emma is an equal opportunity employer.
