Call for Proposals: Host Institutions for 2021 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders

Call for Proposals: Host Institutions for 2021 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders
Posted By: Reggie Culpepper on September 22, 2020

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is seeking a limited number of partners to complement an existing cohort of U.S. colleges, universities, and organizations who receive subawards of up to $200,000 to host 25 young African leaders for a non-credit, non-degree, six-week intensive executive-style leadership and professional development program.

Highlights of the 2021 Fellowship will include:
  • Promising young leaders between the ages of 25 and 35 will enhance their skills and expertise at selected U.S. colleges and universities through Leadership Institutes in one of three themes: Business, Civic Engagement, and Public Management.
  • Each Leadership Institute hosting a cohort of 25 Fellows from mid-June through July 2021 for a non-credit, non-degree, executive leadership style academic program.
  • An intensive Institute model that combines practical academic sessions, leadership training, site visits, professional networking opportunities, community service, and organized cultural activities to maximize professional adult learning and cultural exchange.
  • Programming that strengthens connections between the United States and Africa and establishes enduring partnerships between Fellows, local communities, and private businesses.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the postponement of the 2020 Fellowship to summer 2021, selected U.S. institutional partners will be relied upon to remain as flexible and responsive as possible in adjusting planning and programming to meet the needs of the Fellowship and individual Fellows.

Eligible U.S.-based colleges, universities, and organizations who would like to be considered to host a 2021 Leadership Institute should submit the online application and required materials to IREX no later than Friday, October 30, 2020.

Applications for all tracks are welcome, but institutions who are particularly well positioned to host a Leadership in Public Management Institute are strongly encouraged to apply.
