TOM JOYNER FOUNDATION, DENNY'S PARTNER FOR HUNGRY FOR EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Posted By: Neil Foote on September 21, 2018 College students are eligible to win scholarships for their efforts to combat hunger in their communities DALLAS - The Tom Joyner Foundation and Denny's Corporation, franchisor and operator of one of America's largest full-service restaurant chains, today announced the annual Hungry for Education (HFE) scholarship program, an initiative created for students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to promote education and combat childhood hunger throughout the nation. "This scholarship is making a difference in these students' lives - and in their communities," said Tom Joyner, host of the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show and founder/chairman of the Foundation. "The result: Students are getting a chance to complete their education and they're learning the importance of giving back." As part of the program, nine (9) deserving students from designated HBCUs each have a chance to receive a $2,000 scholarship from Denny's and the Tom Joyner Foundation. From Sept. 1 through Dec. 1, full-time students enrolled at fully certified HBCUs can apply for the scholarship. To be considered, applicants must hold a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 to 4.0. As part of the application, students must submit a 300-word essay describing their idea for a "Community Hunger Program" that brings awareness to and helps combat childhood hunger in their local community. Students must execute the program during the upcoming school year. In order to be considered, students must include a plan, including budget, on how their program will be executed within the upcoming school year. The winning student who has the best idea will receive a one-time stipend of $3,125 to launch his or her program The nine scholarship recipients also will have the chance to apply for a summer internship at Denny's. Eligible winners are required to submit a 90-second video describing his or her project and how it helps combat hunger in their community. Winners of the top Community Hunger Program will then submit a final written report, including pictures, videos and related social media content that shows how their idea was implemented. Denny's launched the 'Hungry for Education' scholarship program in 2013 as part of the brand's continued commitment to help fight childhood hunger and promote education. To-date, Denny's has awarded more than $250,000 in combined scholarships to deserving elementary, high school and college students across the country. "Our partnership with the Tom Joyner Foundation has been tremendously rewarding," said April Kelly-Drummond, director, diversity affairs and multicultural engagement for Denny's. "This Hungry for Education program fulfills both ours and the Tom Joyner Foundation's missions to invest in HBCUs and the community." The Tom Joyner Foundation will be reviewing applications and this year's winners will be announced in December 2018. To apply, students may visit TomJoynerFoundation.org and follow the online application instructions.
