Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor Student Affairs, the Assistant Vice Chancellor Student Retention and Success (AVC-SRS) is a leader and innovator regarding student retention and student success. This position is at the forefront of planning and implementation of services and programs that meet the broader goals and objectives of the University and Student Affairs. The position recommends improvements for administrative and academic services to students that increase student success and retention, and enhances student progress to degree completion through collaborative initiatives and student-centered programs.
The AVC-SRS is accountable for the campus-wide collaboration, development, and implementation of overarching strategic effort that improves student retention and graduation rates. The AVC-SRS plays two vital leadership roles: overseeing staffing, programs and resources among multiple departments; and creating, cultivating partnerships and maintaining a culture of collaborative efforts across campus that serve to provide programs, services, and support for students. The AVC-SRS also provides administrative leadership in the planning, appraisal and implementation of major initiatives to improve retention rates on campus.
The AVC-SRS will have a dotted line supervisor role to the Director of Residential Experience. The dotted line will support our collaboration with Summer Success programs and high impact affinity-based Living Learning Communities.
Resources include a budget of approximately $6.9 million and a staff of over 45 FTE professionals and 200 student employees, peer educators, coaches and graduate assistants/interns. Funding sources include Student Services fees, state funds, campus-based fees, grants, service-generated income and external fundraising.

Qualifications & Requirements QUALIFICATIONS
• Advanced degree in education or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
• Expert knowledge of student development theories and practice and extensive knowledge regarding retention and persistence.
• Astute political acumen regarding sensitive and high visibility issues.
• Demonstrated ability to bring together faculty, colleges and academic administration as well as campus administrators to address complex, student-oriented issues and tasks and provide for mutually-agreed-upon student needs.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze data, to identify, define, and evaluate problems, and to plan and develop strategies and solutions.
• Ability to conduct strategic planning and forecasting, and proven ability to influence change.
• Knowledge of leadership theories and programs, and knowledge of organizational climate and multicultural issues.
• Ability to work with University and interagency committees, groups, and individuals to arrive at sound planning solutions. Demonstrated skill to construct, evaluate and implement innovative and sound solutions to a wide range of issues.
• Ability and skill in managing a multi-fund budget, fundraising, and grant procurement.
• Proven skill in the area of fiscal management including budget development, long-range budget planning, make realistic and equitable fiscal decisions, and prepare cogent budgetary and annual reports.
• Proven ability to set priorities and follow through with implementation.
• Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, unit heads, administration, families, and the academic community.
• Demonstrated ability to motivate staff and students through ethical leadership and mutual respect.
• Outstanding leadership and communication skills, including public speaking, presentations and written communication.
• Demonstrated ability to manage a complex organization, to direct and lead its staff not only effectively but also in a manner that achieves high degrees of collaboration between and synergy from different departments.
• Demonstrated ability to set specific, measurable, challenging, and realistic goals for the organization and for individual staff members.
• Demonstrated experience in program development.
• Excellent analytical skills with proven ability to conduct research, interpret data, and present analyses both orally and in writing. Proven ability to present position papers on a variety of administrative, educational, and institutional issues.
• Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
• Experience working with communities of learning, both residential and non-residential.
